A Large Area of Enamel Attrition Might Call for Restoring the Tooth with a Dental Crown

A misaligned tooth can do more than leave you with an unattractive smile. As the years go by the biting surface of the tooth can start to wear down and erode the tooth enamel on the corresponding tooth in your dentition.

This compromised area of tooth enamel could eventually encourage the development of a large, or lead to severe tooth sensitivity. If the structural integrity of the tooth has been compromised the area of enamel attrition could lead to a severe dental fracture.

If the area of enamel attrition is large Dr. Ximena Velasquez-Pierce might recommend fully replacing the tooth’s enamel layer with a dental crown. The treatment process calls for Dr. Ximena Velasquez-Pierce to remove the remaining tooth enamel to create a small pillar of dentin called an abutment.

A detailed impression will be made of this abutment and any related teeth in your bite pattern. It will be sent to a dental lab where dental technicians will prepare your dental crown from either gold, porcelain, or another metallic alloy.

You will need to return to Dr. Ximena Velasquez-Pierce’s dental office to have the dental crown cemented in place.

If she feels it’s warranted she might also recommend making a minor edit to the biting surface of the offending tooth that caused the enamel attrition. You might also want to consider having the alignment of your teeth corrected by some form of braces.

If you live in the Venice, Florida, area and you have a tooth suffering from enamel attrition, you should call 941-497-4997 to have it examined and treated at Velasquez-Pierce Family Dentistry.
